Gordon Undy is a fine art photographer working from his studio in Sydney, Australia.
He took a Bachelor of Arts degree with honours at the University of Queensland and worked in and around the computer industry until 1991 when he was able to commit to photography full time on his own terms.
His passion is to interpret the intimate Australian landscape through photographs made in silver-gelatin, platinum/palladium and printing out paper. Field work is done in a variety of format sizes from 35mm to the 11x14 inch view camera.
Undy favours an approach which honours the unique qualities of the photographic medium in recording and representing the nuances of light with a high degree of fidelity. His photographs explore the ideas of direct acceptance of the landscape, increasingly uncovering the inherent order in seeming chaos and delighting in the fractal nature of things.
In the USA in 1994 he studied landscape photography with Paul Caponigro and fine printing with George Tice who also introduced him to the craft of platinum/palladium. His photographs are held in private, public and corporate collections in Australasia, Europe and the USA.
Undy is the author of four books of photographs of the Australian landscape and has exhibited widely both in solo and group exhibitions since the early 1980s. He is in demand as a speaker at photographic conventions and as a juror on international selection panels, e.g. Photolucida, the Sydney International, Silvershotz Portfolios.
http://headon.com.au/ Object: Contemporary Wet Plate Collodion Portraiture is an exhibition featuring works by Christopher Getts and Pania Newport that are produced using 19th Century photographic processes. Represented are wet plate collodion tintypes which are objects of art in their own right. Artists Christopher Getts and Pania Newport have captured portraits of people holding an OBJECT that represents something of importance to the sitter whilst the OBJECT held by the sitter is photographed as a separate still life wet plate. Sitters include Gordon Undy, John Nolan, Moshe Rosenzveig, Enrico Scotece, Ben Scott, Penelope Beveridge and others. Each sitter is required to remain still and concentrate on the picture taking process and holding of their important OBJECT which can last for up to 60 seconds (unlike the instant shutter of digital photography today). The resulting intensity of the sitters gaze engages viewers in a manner that is distinct from the casually made, ephemeral images that have become so familiar with today's digital photography. In the minds of the artists, they attempt to capture the meditative relationship between the sitter and their object recording that moment during the extended period of exposure and image capture. It is the stillness and peace that takes place during the process of 'sitting' that is captured on the wet plate and creates the finished "OBJECT".
